Assessment 1b: Theory Question - ASDA FM

1. ASDA FM is a radio station that is played in-store to customers and staff everyday. It plays most of the latest tracks in the charts as most of the people in the UK who go to Asda are between 14-40 and that is there target audience.

2. The purpose of having an in-store radio such as ASDA FM is for entertaining customers and to promote products and helping shoppers to not get bored in a way. It's a way to gain good feedback on the store for not being a rubbish store and actually being entertaining.

3. Asda FM plays music from the top 40 which includes A-list songwriters, B-list songwriters an only a few C-list songwriters. The genre of music played is mostly r&b and hip hop and sometimes classical and maybe country. Which is mostly the type of music that the public like to listen to who go to Asda FM.

4. The different formats and genres appeal to all the public because it is what they want to listen to. During the day, young parents mostly shop between school hours because it's easy for them to shop, and young parents like to listen to top 40 music. But the older public like to shop later in the day and Asda will play classical and country so it appeals to them.

5. The style/genre/ format of music changes according who is likely to be in the store buy the hours in the day. Between schools hours is parents, after school hours is mostly teenagers and the older public. At night is 20-30 year old who have come back from work.

6. I think that Asda FM are very good at appealing to the target audience, they play that right music at the right times which is what is needed for the target audience and the public in general to be happy.

Assessment 1a - Radio 1

BBC Radio 1 is a radio station in London. It is a radio station that has a target audience between the ages of 15-29 living in Britain. This station is based of the latest tracks in the top 40 throughout the day. This music stations radio format is different throughout the day. For e.g. Nick Grim Shaw plays top 40 music from 6:30am till 10am which is mostly for school rides and work travels. Which is what needs to be played as the people driving to work will be from 19 upwards so there is going to need to be top 40 music playing to get you in the mood for the day. Also there will be children around the ages of 15-17 getting a lift to school/college so that is why top 40 chart music needs to be played.

Then at 10:30am till 1:15pm Fearne Cotton plays music which is mostly new music that nobody has really heard before and a couple of tunes from the top 40. But it does change at night because at 2:00am till 4:00am B-traits plays rap music which is mostly for 15-21 year old at party s/ just chilling at home at night and most teenage people listen to rubbish rap music nowadays.

The weekend music that is played is mostly the same as the weekdays but there is more top 40 music played on the weekend then there is on a weekly basis. It is mostly targeted at the audiences in the age range of 15-29 of people who sit at home and do homework, housework, just general sitting round the house and want to chill out.

I think that radio 1 is a good radio station for people in the target audience to listen to because it has their genre of music playing at the right time of day. Radio 1 is a radio station that is targeting a audience between 15-29 so that is why they play the music that they do.

Q&A: 23rd September 2013 - Mindmaps

1. A radio stations music format is the main broadcast content that is played.

2. An A B C playlist is how many times a song gets played. in A list a song will be played about 3 to 4 times. whereas in the B list a song will only be played 2 times and if its in the C list it will only be played once. It depends how popular the song is, that is how its put into the category.

3. Music scheduling is putting together the playlist/ putting them in order. they have to schedule the music so they don't play anything that is not in their format e.g. a pop station playing classic music.

4.

5.  A music scheduler needs to play the right type of music to keep the listener interested. such as using the correct format of music in the right music station, you cant play the wrong music in a radio station because the listener will think 'what is this?' and tune in to a different station.
